What is iMessage

iMessage is Apple's messaging service for iOS and macOS devices. You can use it to send text messages, photos and videos, documents, and use Animoji, Memoji, etc.

iMessage uses your Internet connection to send messages between Apple devices. If the recipient has a device from another manufacturer or the Internet is unavailable, iMessage automatically switches to sending messages via SMS or MMS.

The main benefits of iMessage:

  • messages are encrypted from a sender to a recipient, ensuring data protection;
  • support for group chats with the possibility to assign names to groups, add and remove members, use shared tasks and calendars;
  • Apple Pay support for sending money through messages;
  • Siri integration for sending messages using voice commands;
  • using iCloud to back up your messages;
  • no additional costs are required, as the Internet connection is used, unlike SMS and MMS, which may be charged by telecom operators.

6 tips on how to fix iMessage on MacBook

We offer detailed instructions on how to solve the problem with iMessage. Follow the manual step-by-step until the messenger works correctly.

1. Check the login

Make sure you're logged in with the same Apple ID on the devices you're using.

On a MacBook:

  • open iMessages;
  • go to Settings and select iMessage.

If you see your Apple ID and a "Logout" button at the top, you are logged in.

On the iPhone:

  • open "Settings."
  • tap on your name.

Make sure it matches your email in the "Apple ID" section in the "Messages" section settings.

If you use your iPad or iPod touch for iMessages rather than your iPhone, synchronize them in the same way.

In the browser:

  • log in to appleid.apple.com;
  • click on "Login and Security."
  • go to the "Email and Phone Numbers" menu.

Check that your phone number and email are the same as on your iPhone or Mac.

2. Enable iMessage in iCloud

If iCloud is disabled, the iMessages app will not sync, so you need to perform authorization checks on all devices.

On a MacBook:

  • open the "Messages" menu and select "Settings";
  • navigate to iMessage;
  • check that the "Enable iCloud messages" option is activated.

On the iPhone:

  • select "Messages" in "Settings";
  • make sure iMessage is turned on.

Go to Send and Receive and check if the email and phone number match the ones in your MacBook's message settings.

3. Check the Apple servers

Apple has a page that shows the status of all its services. To check the iMessage servers:

  • go to https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/;
  • find iMessage;
  • If it's green, it's working fine.

Otherwise, you'll have to wait for server troubleshooting.

4. Check the Internet connection

A common cause of the problem is that the Internet is either unavailable or the signal is weak. . To check the availability and quality of the network:

  • turn off the Wi-Fi on your laptop and turn it back on.
  • try moving your MacBook closer to the router;
  • reboot the router (turn it off and after 10 seconds turn it on again).

If there is no Internet, contact your ISP.
