Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2025) took place on June 9, 2025. This event showcased new products from the Cupertino company, including updates to its operating systems, such as the newly announced macOS 26, officially named macOS Tahoe. In this article, we dive into what macOS Tahoe is, its beta and upcoming full release timeline, and the unique features this system will offer.
The beta versions of macOS Tahoe will be released following WWDC 2025. A closed beta is currently being tested, and public beta 2 became available for installation in early July 2025, allowing anyone to test its capabilities. This version is designed for developers to identify bugs and refine the system.
The full version of macOS Tahoe is expected to be released no earlier than September 2025, during Apple’s event announcing new iPhone models, Apple Watch, and other accessories. As is typical, operating systems for these devices (iOS, watchOS) are usually released slightly earlier than macOS Tahoe, aligning with Apple’s traditional release schedule.
Below are the release dates of previous macOS versions for context:

At WWDC 2025, Apple revealed the name of the new macOS update: macOS Tahoe. Continuing the tradition of naming macOS versions after California landmarks, Tahoe was selected, inspired by the scenic Lake Tahoe. Internally, the system was referred to as Cheer during development.
macOS Tahoe is the last version of macOS to support Macs with Intel processors, with support limited to selected iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro models. All future versions will only support Apple silicon. Compatible devices include:
Here’s what users can expect from the macOS Tahoe operating system.
macOS Tahoe will introduce a significant UI overhaul. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, macOS Tahoe, alongside iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, will feature a user interface inspired by visionOS, Apple’s operating system for the Vision Pro headset. This redesign, named "Liquid Glass," aims to unify Apple’s operating systems across platforms, with visionOS as the foundation. Liquid Glass is a translucent material that reflects and refracts surroundings, applied to desktop icons, folders, the Dock, in-app navigation, menus, toolbars, and the Control Center.

While not a direct adaptation of visionOS, the redesign will focus on:

Apple has delayed key Apple Intelligence features for Siri, with an expected rollout in iOS 18 and macOS 15 by late 2025 or possibly 2026. As new features typically debut on iOS first, macOS Tahoe may see these enhancements later. At WWDC 2025, Apple provided limited details on its AI strategy, hinting at potential integrations with third-party services like ChatGPT. Additionally, Google Gemini may be added as an alternative to ChatGPT for Siri requests by mid-2025, enhancing Siri's capabilities across platforms. In the EU, users will be able to set a default voice assistant other than Siri, a feature expected to be available on macOS Tahoe.

macOS Tahoe is expected to incorporate several iOS 26 features. While Apple has not shared specifics about the Home app, rumors of new smart home hardware suggest an update is likely. As the Home app is primarily used on iPhones and iPads, its Mac version may receive updates later.

macOS Tahoe will feature an overhauled Spotlight interface, improving search functionality and integration across the system. Additionally, Launchpad is transformed into an App Library, similar to iOS, providing a more organized and streamlined way to access applications.
macOS Tahoe will reportedly include a dedicated gaming app, integrating games from the App Store, Apple Arcade, and those downloaded outside the App Store. This app aims to enhance the gaming experience on Macs, making it easier to discover and play games across different sources.
macOS Tahoe will introduce a feature to synchronize captive Wi-Fi portal login information across devices. This allows users to enter login details for captive Wi-Fi networks—common in hotels, airports, and coffee shops—once, with the information automatically syncing across their iPhone, iPad, and Mac, improving connectivity convenience.
