The logic board (system) board is a complex device that interconnects all computer components and controls their operation. In case of serious breakdowns or complete failure, it may need to be replaced.
We are often asked: "can I replace the logic board from 2012 to 2015 MacBook Pro 15 Retina?" In this article, we will explain to you how to replace the logic board by yourself, using step-by-step instructions. To process the replacement you need a flat surface, a set of necessary tools and materials. Before starting the repair works, prepare P5 and T5 precision screwdrivers, a spudger, tweezers, a two-component cleaner, thermal paste, isopropyl alcohol and a basket filter.

To replace the logic board on the MacBook Pro A1398 2015, we offer detailed instructions with additional recommendations. It is important to follow the sequence of the process to avoid the risk of damage to components, connectors and cables.
Undo the ten screws that secure the back cover to the case using a P5 screwdriver. At the connection area of the upper and lower parts of the MacBook Pro, catch the edge of the cover and pull towards yourself to release the pins from the clips and remove it.

Peel off the sticker that covers the battery connector, and while lifting the right and left sides alternately, remove the connector from the socket on the system board. Bend it away to prevent unwanted contact with the computer board during repair. Use a spudger to disconnect the antenna cables, work only with the connector not to break the integrity of the wires.
Remove the left cooler cover and bend it back. Use a spudger to take the camera cable connector out of the socket on the logic board. To do this, carefully, move the connector to the right and left in parallel to the device. Pull all camera and antenna cables out of their sockets and set them aside.

Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the four screws that secure the I/O board cable connector covers. Use tweezers to remove the cover on the left and use a spudger to remove the end of the cable from the socket on the system board. Do the same for the right I/O board cable. Remove the adhesive from the wire released from the clamps on the fan housing and remove the wire.

Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the three screws that secure the right fan to the device case. Use a spudger to lift the flap on the right fan cable connector. Gently lift the fan up to reach the cable and remove it. Follow the same steps to remove the left fan.

Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the SSD to the system board. Lift the drive from the speaker side and pull it from the connector on the board.

Remove the two screws from the I/O board with a T5 screwdriver. Gently lift the edge of the board from the inside and pull it toward the center to remove it.

Remove the two screws holding the touchpad wire connector fastener with a T5 screwdriver and remove the cover. Turn the spudger slightly to remove the cable connector from its socket on the system board.

Use tweezers to remove the cap from the screw at the end of the heatsink. Next, follow the step-by-step instructions to disconnect the device connectors connected to the logic board.
Use the tip of a spudger to lift the latch on the ZIF connector of the microphone flat loop. Pull the cable out of the socket by sliding it in one plane with the logic board.
Peel off the tape that covers the top of the keyboard data cable connector and use the tip of a spudger to lift up the lock on the ZIF connector. Pull the data cable out of the connector by pulling it in one plane with the logic board.
Using a spudger, disconnect the right speaker connector from the system board. Gently bend the cable up and out of the way. Do the same for the left speaker.
Using a spudger, remove the keyboard backlight connector out of its socket on the system board.
Use the tip of a spudger to lift the flap of the display cable and rotate it towards the port on the MagSafe 2 charger. Pull the wire out of its socket on the logic board.
Do not lift the cable up to avoid damaging the connector. Pull the wire in parallel to the logic board. Also, do not touch the contacts to avoid damaging them or leaving greasy traces that could worsen contact when reconnected.

Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the two screws from the MagSafe 2 board. Lift up a little and pull the board by moving it away from the side of the MacBook Pro case.

Using the sharp tip of a spudger, lift the HDMI cable fastener and gently pull it out of its socket on the system board, then remove the MagSafe 2 connector by sliding it in parallel to the device.

Use a T5 screwdriver to remove one screw that secures the AirPort board to the logic board. Lift the end of the AirPort card to the extent enough to remove it freely without hitting the heatsink which is behind it, but not too high to avoid damage. Pull the AirPort out of its socket on the board.

Use a T5 screwdriver to remove the four screws from the heatsink brackets. Be careful because they hold two springy brackets that clamp the heatsink to the processor. They may pop out after the first screw is removed, so hold it with your hand. Remove the brackets and the radiator itself.

To replace the logic board with a new one and assemble the MacBook Pro 15, follow these instructions in reverse. When assembling, you need to consider a few recommendations:
be sure to clean the processor, cooling radiator and apply thermal paste (compound);
there is an adhesive thermal seal under the AirPort card that needs to be changed to a new one during the reinstallation process;
make sure that all connectors are connected to the logic board and firmly inserted into the sockets.
