MacBook's users sometimes face a situation when the battery won't charge. In this article, we will tell you about the causes of malfunctions and ways to solve the problem when MacBook won't charge.

Why MacBook won't charge

To deal with the problem or discover why your MacBook won’t charge, you need to find out the reasons for this malfunction. Among the main reasons why the laptop battery won't charge are the following:

  • the power adapter is not plugged in;
  • faulty socket or no electricity;
  • the adapter is not connected correctly;
  • SMC malfunctions;
  • outdated software;
  • adapter malfunction;
  • the wrong adapter is plugged in;
  • the power supply overheated;
  • the battery is dead;
  • the power port is dirty.

What to do if MacBook won't charge

Any MacBook user can try to solve the problem when the MacBook won't turn on or charge without going to a technician, unless ports or components are physically damaged. In this case, you can't do without the help of professionals.

1. Check the power supply connection

Make sure that the power adapter is plugged into a power outlet. Also check the power outlet itself, as it may be faulty. Try to connect your MacBook to another power source.

2. Make sure that the adapter is the one of your MacBook and is in working order

Do a visual inspection of the power supply: it should have no visible physical damage. Also, check the cable for continuity. It may be damaged and may need to be replaced with a new one.

If the power supply is too hot, it may not charge your MacBook. Let it cool down and try to charge the device again.

3. Check that the right adapter is connected

Make sure you plug in the right power supply and cable. There are MacBooks that charge via USB-C, but not all cables of this specification can be used for charging.

MagSafe cables can also be different and not all of them are suitable for connecting to the power adapter. It's best to use the adapter that comes with your MacBook or a purchased original power adapter.

4. Clean the power port

If the connector is heavily soiled, there may be poor contact with the cable plug, so your MacBook won’t charge properly even when plugged in. Check the port and if there are foreign particles or heavy contamination, clean it, but do it carefully so as not to damage anything.

5. Update the software

After the release of macOS Monterey 12.2 update 12.2, many users complained about a bug that caused the battery to drain very quickly in sleep mode. The next update fixed the problem when a MacBook won't charge. This suggests that sometimes the problem of faulty operation and charging problems can be solved by updated software.

Check for updates in your system settings, in "Software Update". If available, install the latest version of macOS.

6. Reset the battery

This method will work for users of MacBook models that were released before 2012. These devices have a removable battery, so resetting it is quite easy:

  1. Disconnect the power supply from the unit.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Press the power button for 10 seconds.
  4. Insert the battery, plug in the charger, and check if your MacBook is charging.

Owners of newer models with a non-removable battery should proceed to the next step.

7. Reset SMC

Sometimes, resetting the SMC (System Management Controller), which is responsible for the performance of a wide variety of nodes and components of a computer, helps to answer the question of why MacBook won't charge.

The procedure differs depending on the installed processor. For a MacBook with an Intel chip, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Connect the power supply.
  3. Hold down the power on/off button and Control+Shift+Option/Alt combination for 4-5 seconds.
  4. Turn on your MacBook.

Owners of devices with M1 chips can simply turn their MacBook on and off. There is no SMC in these models, and all of the functions that are processed by the chip are built into the CPU.

8. Check the condition of the battery

The battery often wears out faster than indicated in the manufacturer's specifications. This happens in case of improper or excessive use. This is why it is very important to keep an eye on the condition of the battery so that you don't find yourself without a working laptop at the worst possible moment.

A battery condition check is necessary if the battery of MacBook does not charge or charges incorrectly. There are two available ways to do this yourself.

The standard battery in your MacBook is rated for 1,000 charge/discharge cycles. To check battery condition is to use the integrated functions.

To see if your MacBook battery won't charge due to its failure, go to system settings and then to the "Battery" tab. The window will display a message indicating one of two statuses:

  • Normal: there is nothing wrong with the battery, and it is in working condition.
  • Service recommended: the battery is holding less charge than necessary, so it needs to be replaced soon.

9. Check if there are any applications blocking battery charging

Some applications overload the battery. You can check this by using the CleanMyMac X. It is a free program.

Simply open CleanMyMac X, go to the Menu app, and see which apps excessively consume the battery power. They are shown on the Memory tab.

In the same window, you have the option to close these applications that are running in the background. Do not terminate background processes unless you are sure you know what they are responsible for, so as not to cause a system crash.
