Apple is expected to unveil major updates across its operating systems, adopting a new year-based naming convention to reflect the upcoming "season." The next-generation versions will be named iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 3, aligning with their availability across 2025 and 2026. This synchronized numbering replaces the previously expected iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, watchOS 12, tvOS 19, and visionOS 3, making it easier for users to track updates and aligning with rumored design changes for a unified software look across platforms.
These updates will introduce significant design overhauls inspired by the Apple Vision Pro interface, featuring rounder app icons, translucent menus, and a glassy, floating design for buttons and interface elements. The updates will also deepen artificial intelligence integration, enhancing user experience with smarter personalization, voice interaction, and automation.
iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 will "fundamentally change" the look of the operating systems, introducing a consistent cross-platform experience. Apple will update the style of icons, menus, apps, windows, and system buttons, simplifying navigation and control. The design, loosely based on visionOS, will feature round app icons, translucent interface elements, and pill-shaped bottom navigation bars in most apps. This marks the biggest update to iOS since iOS 7, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Additional features include an AI-based battery management system to improve iPhone battery life, new AirPods features, a dedicated gaming app, a revamped AI-powered Shortcuts app, and an updated Health app with nutrition tracking and other enhancements. More details can be found in the iOS 26 roundup.
macOS 26, expected to be named "Tahoe" after Lake Tahoe in California, will feature an overhauled design with updated icons, menus, and apps, aligning closely with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 for a consistent look. It will include many of the same updates as iOS 26, such as the new gaming app and AirPods features.
watchOS 26 will incorporate visionOS-inspired design changes, including translucent interface elements, a glassy finish, subtle lighting effects, and rounded buttons. While not a complete overhaul, the UI will align with iOS 26’s refreshed look. New features powered by Apple Intelligence will be introduced, though on-device AI processing will be limited due to the Apple Watch’s RAM and storage constraints.
tvOS 26 will adopt translucent menus, buttons, and simplified app designs, emphasizing content. These changes align with the broader design updates across Apple’s operating systems.
visionOS 3 will build on last year’s introduction, offering richer AR and VR experiences, empowering developers to create more immersive applications for Apple Vision Pro and beyond.
Artificial Intelligence at the Core: Apple is expanding AI-powered features for both users and developers. This includes enhanced AI-assisted coding tools in Xcode, smarter Siri capabilities that anticipate user needs, and new APIs for seamless AI integration across apps and devices.
Cross-Device Experience: Apple is focusing on tighter ecosystem integration, enabling smoother transitions and interactions between iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and Vision Pro. Features like Universal Control and Continuity will gain new capabilities.
Privacy and Security: With privacy as a cornerstone, WWDC 2025 will introduce new tools for safeguarding data, including improved app transparency and stronger encryption options.
Environmental Initiatives: Expect announcements related to Apple’s sustainability efforts, including greener manufacturing processes and energy-efficient software optimizations to reduce device power consumption.
While hardware announcements are not the primary focus, there is speculation about a new Mac Pro being unveiled, as most other Macs have recently been updated. Other models, like the MacBook Pro, are not expected to receive updates until later in 2025.
The WWDC 2025 keynote will begin on June 9 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific / 1:00 p.m. Eastern and will be accessible on the following platforms:
